A cantora norte-americana Aretha Franklin, de 76 anos, morreu nesta quinta-feira (16), em casa, em Detroit, nos Estados Unidos. A informação foi confirmada por Gwendolyn Quinn, empresário da artista.
Chamada de a “rainha do soul” ou “dama do soul”, Aretha Franklin virou ícone da música negra. Era apontada como referência e foi considerada a maior cantora de todos os tempos pela revista Rolling Stones. A mesma revista ainda a elegeu como a nona maior artista da música de todos os tempos.
A cantora nasceu em Memphis, mas foi criada em Detroit, Michigan, e foi responsável por sucessos como “Think”, “I Say a Little Prayer”, “Until You Come Back to Me”, “Chain of Fools”, “(Sweet, Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone”, “Call Me”, “Ain’t No Way”, “Don’t Play That Song (for me)”, “Freeway of Love”, entre outros.
Talentosa e com uma elevada habilidade artística e vocal, Aretha Franklin também interpretou jazz, rock, blues, pop e ópera. Tornou-se a primeira mulher a integrar o Rock & Roll Hall of Fame em 1987. Ao todo, a artista recebeu 18 prêmios Grammy e três honorários – o que a coloca como a segunda mais condecorada da história, atrás somente de Alison Krauss.
